history
& heritage @ the edge
An
apartment at robinsons may be a new home or a new start but it's
also a precious piece of history and part of our protected architectural
heritage.
Built
in the 'heady' days of the late 1920's, on what was once an orchard,
Robinsons Depository was designed as a furniture storage warehouse.
At the time it was considered state-of-the-art containing one of
the largest vehicle lifts in Europe. This allowed removal vans to
be taken up to each floor for loading or unloading. This will be
transformed into the centrepiece entrance and stairwell to the new
conversion with a new, "normal sized" lift!

The
Robinson family had depositories in London and Manchester and
this, their Birmingham location, was used to store furniture
throughout its seventy year life. Still a family-run business
based in Redditch, the fourth generation of Robinsons reluctantly
sold the Moseley building back in the late nineties when it
became commercially uneconomic. |

The
fine brickwork façade and roof lines haven't altered
since the day they were built. The good news is that despite
more windows on the 4th floor, they will remain largely the
same. The dramatic changes are in the conversion and restoration
of the interior. |

One
of Moseley's most imposing landmark buildings now has a fine new
future as well as a proper place and purpose in the community.
